Polish Types — PC, UPC, APC
The endface polish decides how much light bounces back into the transmitter. Get it wrong and analog video, RF-over-fiber, or GPON signals will misbehave.
When two fiber ends touch inside a mated connector, some light reflects back toward the transmitter. That’s called return loss (or optical return loss). More loss is better — it means less reflected light.
The way the ferrule endface is polished changes that reflection. Three common polishes.
PC — Physical Contact
Slightly rounded ferrule endface, so the two fiber cores actually touch when mated. Basic polish.
- Return loss: better than −40 dB
- Endface color hint: none (older, largely superseded)
- Suitable for: basic SM/MM digital links
Rare in new deployments — UPC has taken over.
UPC — Ultra Physical Contact
Higher-precision domed polish. Less air gap, tighter contact, more back-reflection suppression.
- Return loss: better than −50 dB (single-mode), −30 dB (multimode)
- Endface color hint: blue connector housing
- Suitable for: standard digital Ethernet — 1G, 10G, 25G, 40G, 100G, 400G
The default for data-center and enterprise Ethernet. If nobody has explicitly told you to use APC, use UPC.
APC — Angled Physical Contact
Ferrule endface polished at an 8° angle. Reflected light bounces into the cladding instead of back into the core, so return loss is dramatically better.
- Return loss: better than −60 dB (single-mode only)
- Endface color hint: green connector housing
- Suitable for: GPON / EPON, analog RF-over-fiber, DWDM long-haul, CATV distribution, anything reflection-sensitive
The gotcha
Never mate an APC to a UPC. The 8° angle physically damages the flat UPC endface and dramatically increases insertion loss. Pick one polish per link and stick to it.
Quick reference
| Application | Polish |
|---|---|
| Enterprise / data-center Ethernet | UPC |
| Multimode (any) | UPC |
| GPON / EPON access networks | APC |
| CATV / analog RF-over-fiber | APC |
| DWDM long-haul metro | APC |
Rule of thumb: if the incumbent gear has green connectors on it, order APC. If it has blue connectors, order UPC.
